So, you’ve accepted a very special position in a wedding: you’re a bridesmaid or a groomsman!
You’re elated. Honored. And let’s be honest: a little bit nervous.
What exactly should you expect when you’re part of the bridal party? Here are a few things to know so you can handle your duties like a pro and ensure the bride and groom have the best day ever.
You’re a Part of the Planning Council
Planning a wedding can seem insurmountable, even with advisors and planners at the helm.
For many future brides and grooms, the wedding party serves as a council for them to bounce ideas off of.
Your job as a bridesmaid or groomsman isn’t necessarily to tell them exactly what to do (in fact, unless they ask, it’s best to keep your thoughts to yourself); rather, you serve as a pillar of emotional support.
Does the maid of honor or the best man need any assistance?
Most of the time, expect to be involved in the planning of the pre-wedding events, like a bachelor or bachelorette party. You won’t be in charge – that’s typically the MOH or BM, but you’re there to support.
The Rehearsal Dinner
Show up for the major rehearsal events! This is definitely one area you won’t want to fumble. If there’s a dinner, be prepared to attend.
Here’s where you’ll also likely meet the wedding planner and learn many of the day-of activities you’ll be involved in.
Keep Your Cool & Keep the Vibes High
Weddings are stressful and nerve-wracking. As for emotional support, one of your jobs is to help keep the bride or groom calm, hydrated, and in a great mood.
Contribute to the celebratory mood throughout the festivities, especially at the reception if you’ll attend.
Offer Your Support
Providing a gift before the wedding is customary, but there are other ways to support as a bridesmaid or groomsman:
Offer to help! Whether it’s collecting impromptu event photos from guests or handling gift returns later, there are many different tasks before, during, and after the event that might need to be done. Check with the maid of honor or best man on where your support would be most appreciated.
