Oh my gosh! Say it isn’t so…could we finally be getting a sequel to the popular and super funny Wedding Crashers movie? The original comedy premiered on the big screen in 2005 and featured Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. The premise of the film had Vaughn’s & Wilson’s characters (two divorce mediators)“crashing” weddings to enjoy free meals & booze as well as meeting and having sex with women. The pair found themselves in some pretty precarious situations throughout the movie, which made it an absolutely hilarious comedy.
Wedding Crashers did exceptionally well as a summer release, bringing in a whopping $288.5 million in revenue worldwide -on just a $40 million budget. Vaughn and Owen had great chemistry on screen, which helped propel it to success globally. But the revenue isn’t it’s only success—many people credit Wedding Crashers with helping to revive the popularity of adult-oriented, R-rated comedies.
Since it was so successful, many people thought for sure that there would be a sequel. But Vaughn, Wilson, and director David Dobkin never entertained the idea. But now is a different story. After 15 years of waiting for a Wedding Crashers sequel, we can finally say that Vince Vaughn has confirmed that talks for a “Wedding Crashers 2” are currently in the early stages. And Vaughn, Owen Wilson, and director David Dobkin are also set to return.
So, 15 years later, what would the Wedding Crashers sequel plot be? Well, here’s how Dobkin explains it.
“My friends that are in their late 40s who, either their marriages didn’t work out or they never even necessarily ended up with the girl that they wanted to marry. In either version, you can’t just have the life you want because you want it. And when you get later in age, you find that even going out dating is weird and strange, and you’re looked at as a bit of an old man. I was like, that’s funny. How can we take that? That would be the story I would want to see of these two guys, and so we started hashing it out, and we played around with it. It seems very promising.”
We certainly hope that they can lock down their idea and create an equally funny sequel because it is one of our all-time favs. But as with every really successful movie, it’s typically hard to top the first one. They have a lot to live up to!
